How to Download Sentinel-2 Data
Sentinel-2 is a satellite mission of the Copernicus programme that provides high-resolution optical imagery of the Earth's land surface and coastal waters. Sentinel-2 data can be used for various applications such as land cover mapping, vegetation monitoring, disaster management, and climate change studies.

In this article, we will explain how to download Sentinel-2 data using different methods and tools.
Access to Sentinel Data via the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem
The Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem is a new service launched by ESA in January 2023 that provides access to all Sentinel data with new features for visualisation and data processing. The Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem consists of three main components:
The Copernicus Data Store (CDS), which is the central repository of all Sentinel data and other Copernicus products.
The Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS), which are cloud-based platforms that offer access to CDS data and tools for processing, analysis, and exploitation.
The Copernicus User Support Service (CUSS), which provides user registration, authentication, helpdesk, and feedback mechanisms.
To access Sentinel data via the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, users need to register on the CUSS website and obtain a user account. Then, they can choose one of the DIAS platforms to access and download Sentinel data. The DIAS platforms are:
CREODIAS, operated by CloudFerro
MUNDI, operated by Airbus
ONDA, operated by Serco
SOBLOO, operated by Orange
WEkEO, operated by EUMETSAT, ECMWF, and Mercator Ocean
Each DIAS platform offers different functionalities and services, such as web portals, APIs, catalogues, processing tools, and cloud computing resources. Users can compare the features and prices of each DIAS platform on the CUSS website and select the one that best suits their needs.
Access to Sentinel Data via the Copernicus Open Access Hub
The Copernicus Open Access Hub (previously known as Sentinels Scientific Data Hub) is the legacy service that provides complete, free and open access to Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-5P user products. The Copernicus Open Access Hub will continue its full operations until the end of June 2023 to allow a smooth migration to the new Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem by all user communities. As from July 2023 and until September 2023, the Copernicus Open Access Hub will continue offering access to Sentinel data with a gradual ramp-down of the operations capacity and data offering.
To access Sentinel data via the Copernicus Open Access Hub, users need to register on the website and obtain a user account. Then, they can use one of the following access points:
The Open Hub, which provides access to all Sentinel missions data through an interactive graphical user interface (GUI).
The API Hub, which provides access to all Sentinel missions data through application programming interfaces (APIs) without a GUI.
The S-5P Pre-Ops, which provides access to Sentinel-5P level 1B and level 2 pre-operational data with credentials s5pguest:s5pguest.
The POD Hub, which provides access to precise orbit determination (POD) pre-operational products for Sentinel 1, 2 and 3 missions with credentials gnssguest:gnssguest.
Users can also use the APIs and create scripts for automatic search and download of Sentinels' data, with synchronous access to the latest data and asynchronous access to historic data via the API and GUI. For further details or requests of support users can send an e-mail to eosupport@copernicus.esa.int.
